The ultimate goal of individual psychotherapy is to improve an individuals mental health by spending 1:1 time with your therapist. Sessions typically occur once a week for a total of 55 minutes. However, the duration and frequency of these sessions may vary, depending on your needs. These sessions can be done in person, via telephone, and/or through our Telehealth services (see below for more details).
During these sessions you are encouraged to dive into solving your problems using the framework of evidence based psychotherapies. Click the link below to learn more about evidence based psychotherapies.
A psychological assessment is typically completed at the first session of therapy and lasts between 60 and 90 minutes. A psychological assessment is a method in which a psychologist objectively examines current emotional functioning in conjunction with a thorough review of the individual’s personal history and any available medical or mental health records. Some situations may require the clinician to examine a client’s anxiety, depression, and intelligence levels; however, tests which are selected are chosen based on the clients main presenting problem.
Reiki (“Rei” = God’s Wisdom or Higher Power; “Ki” = Life Force Energy) is a Japanese technique that promotes healing, helps reduce stress, and increases relaxation. Founded by Dr. Mikao Usui in 1922, the practice of Reiki involves a light touch “laying on of hands” to increase the flow of universal life force energy. Treatments are wholistic in nature and target domains including physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being. Reiki is a simple, natural, and safe treatment modality that can be used by anyone to supplement traditional medical interventions. Benefits of Reiki include relaxation and feelings of peace, security, and well-being. Reiki is not affiliated with any religion or spirituality, so all one needs to do to receive treatments is be open to the experience.
The philosophy underpinning Reiki suggests that healing the spirit through conscious self-improvement is a necessary part of feeling one’s best. Clients are encouraged to take responsibility for their healing and take an active role in it.
Reiki has been studied by medical professionals to determine its effectiveness. One review of 13 studies showed Reiki to be a “safe and gentle ‘complementary’ therapy that activates the parasympathetic nervous system to heal body and mind. It has potential for broader use in management of chronic health conditions, and possible in postoperative recovery.

If you live in Illinois, but are unable to meet in person we are able to connect with you through our HIPPA compliant video chat. This option is appropriate for most individuals; however, there are some limitations depending on the nature of the presenting complaint and psychological history. Overall, research shows there is no difference in outcomes for individuals who participate in either in person or telehealth services.
